'Twas the Month Before Christmas

A Brief History of the NYGFL

By Cyd Zeigler jr.

Twas the month before Christmas
And there in my house,
Bill was calling me lazy.
He said I was a louse.

“If you want to play football,
Then start a gay league.
You’ve got me on board,
Now build up a team.”

In the cold dead of winter
They came, oh so psyched
First were David and Mike
And Tim and the other Mike

We divided our tasks,
Elected ourselves as the Board,
Somehow secured a dirt field:
This was working, Good Lord!

Then we brought in Corey,
Laurence, David, and Alon
People, stop the presses:
We were all getting along!

But the first real big test
Came at the Village’s Cubbyhole,
‘Twas our first recruiting event
Where we had a solid goal.

If fifteen people signed up there
It would be a good start
Then we’d have our first league
Well, at least, one small part.

There were naysayers, for sure.
One guy said, “there is no way.
People have tried to start this league before,
And it hasn’t worked,” ‘til that day.

Thirty people signed up.
‘Twas a rousing success.
We had hit every goal
With encouraging excess!

Then a party at Eagle
Where 30 more members signed up
People really did like us.
We had been lining them up!

The first league practice would be a rainout
It was gross and so wet.
And Easter, on top of it:
Twenty was all we would get.

So it was with surprise
When Bill tried talking to each one
That over 50 players showed.
Gay guys don’t do that – what have we done?

The draft went quite smoothly.
Well, except for about half.
When Tim worried about his team
We all got a good laugh.

Week 1 brought more rain,
But this group didn’t care!
We thought about canceling,
But press on we did dare.

Of course, out of week 1
Came the season’s biggest drama
An attack, a complaint,
This was more than we bargained for.

But we all learned a lesson:
A valuable one, at that.
And the season went smoothly,
Well, except for Joe’s and my spat.

There was Meana Undefeata,
Team Zen took control.
Philip Marie was left winless,
Then beat #1 HK – behold!

Eagle had great spirit,
And tall Paul to boot!
Team Jager – well, they won.
Joe’s legs made defenses moot.

But the point of the season
Was to make friends, have fun.
Win or lose, mission accomplished,
I hope, for each and every one.

We all focused on the right things,
And, as I said every night:
“What a happy season for all,
And from all, the good fight.”
